Records/Results - "Become part of the written history of the oldest road race in Kansas!"

The first Lake Atwood Ten Mile was held at the insistence of Lee Keirns, President of the State Bank of Atwood. He persuaded Bob Creighton to be its Director. Bob said he would direct if Lee would help. These two friends staged their first race on a very hot July evening in 1972 two months before Frank Shorter sparked a national road running boom with a gold medal marathon finish in the Olympic Games held in Munich, Germany. The number of runners coming to Atwood increased every year and by 1978 the biggest race ever held in Kansas was staged around the lake with more than 300 at the starting line and 286 crossing the finish. There have been many other larger races held in Kansas since 1978, but the 1978 Atwood race still ranks as one of the most competitive with 78 finishers under 60 minutes.
